A media release about Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom winning the Public Architecture Award on Friday has been published on the Horowhenua District Council. You can read the annoucement here

We are delighted that the Library /Museum/Community facility project recently completed in Foxton has just be rewarded by the NZIA. The complex project which houses the public Library, a Maori Gallery, a Dutch Gallery, and community facilities has made a welcome impact on the life of the local township. The judges citations reads:

” It is the result of a decade of politicking, but the impact of this wholly appropriate and apparently simple stroke of genius on the town of Foxton has been immense. The architects have “suspended a waka in a Mitre 10 shed”, and in doing so created a community hub around the iconic Windmill, Whare Manaaki and Flax-strippers Museum – bringing iwi and Netherlands’ histories together across a library and connecting the main street town centre back to the river. This project showcases the best of what architecture can contribute to our communities.”

Many thanks to wonderful input from the Horowhenua District Council team and all the volunteers, consultants and contractors, the majority of whom were locally based.

Te Awahou opening: a fantastic day on Saturday…..a couple of hundred people for the 4am dawn ceremony…then thousands of people turned out for the opening ceremony….great weather…..great events and speeches and performances….then the doors opened and they flooded in. Everyone very impressed and seemed blown away by it all. It has been 9 years since we started this project so it is a major to see it finally opening.
